How to book a taxi in Sri Lanka

Colombo airport taxi (CMB, Katunayake)

Almost every trip starts at Bandaranaike International Airport in Katunayake. Your driver waits in the arrivals hall with a name board, with 60 minutes of free waiting, and the price below is for the whole car, tolls included, fixed before you land.

Sri Lanka taxi questions

How much does a taxi cost in Sri Lanka?

A private taxi between towns starts at $35 (Rs 11,000) for the whole car, and long routes work out at about $55 (Rs 17,500) per 100 km in an economy sedan. From Colombo airport it is $35 (Rs 11,000) to Colombo, $55 (Rs 17,500) to Kandy and $80 (Rs 24,500) to Galle. Fuel, expressway tolls, parking and the driver are included.

Is the price per person or per car?

Per car. Three people with their luggage pay the same as one, and the price is fixed when you book: it does not change with traffic or with the road the driver takes.

Can I book a taxi or cab in Sri Lanka online?

Yes. Choose where you start and where you are going, see the fixed price, and pay it by card to confirm: that price is all-inclusive, with nothing left to pay on the day. You get your booking reference straight away, then your driver’s name and number on WhatsApp before pickup. If you prefer, you can pay 50% now and the rest to the driver in cash, for 10% more.

Do PickMe and Uber work in Sri Lanka?

For short rides in Colombo, Kandy or Galle, yes: PickMe is the local app, and Uber runs with fewer drivers. For the airport and for long trips between towns they are less reliable — drivers often cancel once they see the destination, and the fare is an estimate. A pre-booked taxi gives you one price agreed in advance and a driver who knows where he is going.

Do the drivers speak English?

Yes. Every driver is licensed and speaks English, and every car is air-conditioned.

Can I cancel a booking?

Yes, free of charge up to 24 hours before pickup: what you paid becomes a credit worth 110%, valid twelve months.

Can I hire a car with a driver for several days?

Yes. A car with an English-speaking driver costs from $90 (Rs 28,000) a day, with 250 km a day, fuel, tolls and the driver’s room and meals included. Two days minimum.

Which parts of Sri Lanka do you cover?

The whole island: Colombo and its airport, Negombo, Kandy and the hill country, Ella, the Cultural Triangle, the south coast from Bentota to Tangalle, Yala, Trincomalee, Arugam Bay and Jaffna.
